Shirley is a popular area to live in Southampton, offering flats, apartments and plenty of housing. It’s extremely popular with families and also working professionals.


The district on the Western side of Southampton, England. Shirley’s main roles are retailing and residential. It is the most important suburban shopping area in the west of the city. Housing is a mixture of council houses in the centre of the district surrounded by private housing, with larger suburban houses concentrated in Upper Shirley. The town is separated from Highfield by Southampton Common. The general area covers the main residential areas of Shirley, Upper Shirley, Regents Park and Freemantle. The whole area is situated to the West of the City Centre and basically extends from the Railway Station to the M271 to the West. The Common to the North and includes the area to the lower side of the Southampton General Hospital.

Residential Area

The greater Shirley area offers a wide selection of residential properties ranging from the typical brick-built 1900’s style Victorian’s to modern stylish apartments as well as local council housing in the centre and on the Northern and Western parameters of the area.


The High Street has a good selection of shops, banks and building societies. These range from small independent businesses to large retailers including Sainsbury’s, Iceland, Wilkinsons and many more. Just on the outskirts of the area, there is a large 24/7 Tesco and two retail parks.


There is a wide selection of restaurants and takeaways to satisfy all taste buds. Although there isn’t any nightlife as such in the area, there are a large number of local pubs. Furthermore, night buses run into the City Centre and back.

Local Schools

The area is home to several schools including Upper Shirley High School (formerly Bellemoor Boys School), Taunton’s College and the 450-year-old King Edward VI School. Additionally, the area is home to Regents Park Community College (formerly Regents Park Girls School).


By car, Shirley is just a 5 minute drive to the City Centre and is easily accessible to the Railway station. Shirley is also located off the two main roads into Southampton, the A35 and A31 and just a few minutes’ drive to the main motorways M27 and M3.
