Bitterne is an eastern suburb and Electoral Ward of Southampton, England.

Residential Area

Bitterne Ward comprises the suburbs of Bitterne and Thornhill. Therefore it borders Sholing Ward and Harefield Ward to the west and north. According to the 2011 census, the population is around 14,384.


The local Market began with a number of stalls ranging from book stalls to butchers. Since then, the market has been run every Wednesday from 09:30 – 15:30 and is a huge success for local businesses. There is also an array of shops, restaurants and leisure facilities, including a bowling alley, travel agents, banks and supermarkets.


As with any major city, there is always a very wide choice of bars and clubs and Southampton is no exception. The city centre is only 2.9 miles away (a 5 minute drive) and offers a huge variety of nightlife.

Local schools

Especially relevant for families, the area offers two local schools for both junior and secondary pupils. These are Bitterne CE junior and infant School and Bitterne Park Secondary School.


There is a frequent bus service from First Bus Southampton.

The nearest major railway station is Southampton Central which most buses serve on the way into the City Centre.
